Tips For Lowering Blood Pressure

After age 50, the systolic (top) number in blood pressure readings tends to creep up. The following are tips to help keep your blood pressure in the normal range and reduce the risk of developing hypertension, heart disease or stroke.1

  • Reduce sodium intake to 2,300 mg per day (1,500 mg if you already have hypertension)
  • Reduce caffeine intake
  • Exercise 30 minutes each day
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • If overweight, lose five to 10 pounds
  • Reduce intake or stop drinking alcohol
  • Stop smoking
